Your Move
We understand that moving can be a stressful time for everyone. The below hints may help to make your experience a pleasant one.
- Create a list of tasks and personal items (jewelry, important documents) that you may want to transport yourself.
- Your task list could include notifying the post office, utility and cable company, family, and friends of your new address. Notification for forwarding your mail to the new address can be done over the web, in person, or mailed.
- Moving is a good time to dispose of clutter and old items in the home that may not be needed. You may even want to sell or give to your stuff to a local charity. You know what they say, “One mans trash….”
- Label your boxes to make it easier for you and the movers when they arrive at your new location.
- Do not interlock the tops of the boxes, always tape them with packing tape.
- Remember: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
- For electronic connections, sometimes it helps to label or take a picture of their locations in the back of the equipment before pulling them apart . This can aid in easy reconnects at the new location.
- Place an open box or a couple boxes to the side to include personal items, paper towels, sheets, towels, toilet paper, etc. You don’t want to go crazy looking for these at the new location especially if it’s a late move.
- If you do anticipate a late move, keeping a flashlight close may also help.
- Set aside any cleaning supplies that will be needed once everything is moved.
- If you have high priority items, you may want to have these loaded last so that they are the first thing off the truck.
- If you have white or light colored mattresses you may want to purchase mattress bags to protect them during the move.
- Remember that moving can be a stressful time for the kids. If they have close friends in the neighborhood exchange contact information for future visits.
- You may want to let the kids say a goodbye to their favorite places in and around the neighborhood.
- If the kids have a favorite toy, this could be something they carry with them or put on the truck last so that they know it won’t get left.
- Make sure you have enough cash to make it through the day.
- Now that you have moved, explore your new neighborhood and don’t forget your new address and phone number.
